Hackers linked to the Chinese government were able to steal about 60,000 US government emails in May through hacking Microsoft Outlook.
According to Reuters, pirates had access to U.S. diplomats’ e-mail accounts in East Asia, the Pacific, and Europe, as well as a list of all U.S. State Department e-mail accounts, all by hacking Outlook accounts of 25 different organizations using a consumer signature key after it was stolen from a Microsoft employee’s account.
In response, Microsoft took action to revoke the stolen signature key and discovered that there was no unauthorized access to customers’ accounts by falsifying an access code.
